Fred M. Fiske was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He lived in Iowa and Washington, D.C., then abroad as the son of a U.S. diplomat. Fiske earned degrees in history from Harvard University and journalism from Columbia University. He retired after a forty-year newspaper reporting and editing career that included writing editorials for The Post-Standard in Syracuse, New York. He was president of the National Conference of Editorial Writers in 2001, and a Pulitzer Prize juror in 2002 and 2003. He lives near Syracuse
